Sun News Network going off the air

By

TORONTO (NEWS1130) – Sun News TV, a cable news channel launched in Canada back in 2011, is going off the air.  The network is reportedly pulling the plug because of a lack of ratings.

Sun News was a pay TV channel, meaning casual audiences were never really exposed to it, and it never developed a substantial following.

Its supporters blame the CRTC for not giving it the same channel access enjoyed by news networks operated by the likes of the CBC and CTV.

The network also catered to conservative viewers.

Former BCIT broadcasting instructor George Orr says that kind of audience just isn’t very big in Canada.

“[They] were happy to be branded as a conservative news outlet with a conservative prospective and personalities that reflect all that.  As much as we have a Conservative government in Canada we don’t seem to have a large base of people who hold themselves as conservatives — not a large enough base to make ‘Fox News North’ in a money making enterprise anyway.”

Roughly 200 people will lose their jobs when the channel fades to black on Friday.
