VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A travesty, but not surprising: that is what one advocacy group is saying after a whale from the Vancouver Aquarium died at SeaWorld in Orlando.

Nanuq died at the Orlando attraction, with some insisting the mammal was attacked by two other whales, suffering a broken jaw which became infected.

However, the Vancouver Aquarium’s Marine Science Centre says there was no aggression involved, saying it was an unfortunate accident. “The animal was hit in the jaw by a flailing tail from a female beluga as he was turning to follow.”

Annelise Sorg with No Whales in Captivity argues confinement breeds aggression.

Sorg says the Vancouver Aquarium is growing its cetacean program. “There are expanding the tanks and plan to house eight of each species to continue performing for the tourists for petting pools and breeding pools. They are just not listening to the public.”
