Province may consider harsher distracted driving penalties

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If recently increased penalties for distracted driving don’t prove an effective deterrent, the province will consider harsher sanctions.

It could be more than just added penalty points and higher fines you could face, if distracted driving statistics remain unchanged, says Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton.

“When we initially… added the penalty points, it was said then that we would gauge behaviours. Going forward, if we see that things aren’t changing, then I’m sure the Ministry of Justice will have a look at it again.”

Back in October, Justice Minister Suzanne Anton announced people would be hit with three penalty points for distracted driving, in addition to the $167 fine already in place.

ICBC and police have launched yet another province-wide enforcement campaign.
