Vancouverites invited to Fix It instead of throwing it away

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – What do you do when your toaster doesn’t work, or your jacket zipper is broken? Throw them away, right?

The Fix It Collective is giving you a chance to give your stuff a second life.

Roughly fashioned after the Repair cafes in European cities and even in Seattle, the workshops entail people getting together in one room once a month to fix things.

Jocelynn Rodrigues launched the Fix It Collective in January and says it won’t necessarily rely on repair experts.

“It’s really about bringing people together and sharing the skills we have. If nobody knows how to fix something, we come together to figure it out, either by looking online or pooling our resources together,” she explains.

The first gathering centred on fairly specific repair jobs.

“It was textile-themed. That worked really well because sewing on a button or repairing a hole in a sock are common problems,” says Rodrigues

This Saturday, however, folks can bring almost anything they want to repair. Rodrigues says people shouldn’t bring their bikes or large appliances, due to space constraints.

Saturday’s workshop will be held at what’s called the Hackspace, at 1715 Cook Street at the Olympic Village on False Creek, between 1 and 4 p.m.
