It’s NHL trade deadline day

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – More than a few big names could be moving on today, it’s the NHL trade deadline.

The Tampa Bay Lightning made a couple moves overnight, nabbing blueliner Braydon Coburn from Philadelphia and the Oilers have finally parted with pending unrestricted free agent Jeff Petry, sending the defenceman east to Montreal.

We are still waiting on the day’s first blockbuster, but no one is sure when that might happen or which team will try to add the final piece to the post-season puzzle.

News1130 Sports‘ Rick Dhaliwal says such a move isn’t guaranteed. “There’s not many big names left on that market and a lot of people are wondering who exactly is going to move today when so many big names have moved in the past seven days.”

The Canucks haven’t been among those teams yet but Rick says fans here shouldn’t hold their breath waiting for a re-modelling of the franchise today. “Not many [are] expecting the Canucks to make a major move today — maybe some tinkering.”

The Canucks are off tonight and host San Jose tomorrow. You can catch full NHL trade deadline coverage on Sportsnet.ca.
