VIEUX FORT, St. Lucia – A Canadian man charged in the death of a four-year-old boy in St. Lucia is set to appear in court today.

The Royal St. Lucia Police Force says Sahab Jamshidi has been formally charged with causing death by gross negligence or recklessness in the drowning of Terrel Joshua Elibox.

Police say the charge carries a possible sentence of life in prison.

Police said last week investigators were told Terrel was given a ride by a kite surfer on Feb. 22, fell into the sea and submerged.

A search and rescue mission was immediately conducted, but police said in a release that the boy’s body was not recovered until two days later.

A Facebook page set up by a friend of Jamshidi says he was told the Hamilton area man saw Terrel bobbing in the water and tried to save him, but the waves were too strong.

A local TV station previously reported family members of the boy said they had no idea he was missing until a man approached his grandmother, saying he’d taken the boy on his surfboard and he’d fallen off.
