Crowdfunding campaigns continue to grow and are here to stay: expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You see them all over your Facebook and Twitter feeds: crowdfunding campaigns asking you for money.

Whether it’s to raise funds for a medical treatment, a family tragedy or some sort of social injustice, SFU Communications Professor Peter Chow-White says they are effective because they reach a lot of people.

He adds they’re not anonymous and can hit people personally, motivating people to donate.

“If there’s a face to the name, if there’s a story that people can connect to, that’s going to compel people to contribute and be a part of impacting someone’s life in a very real way. People are finding better ways to contribute and engage that are more than just clicking a like and forwarding a topic to somebody.”

He says these campaigns have been around for a while but continue to grow in popularity. “The noise is getting louder as far as these types of opportunities to donate and contribute to people’s lives.”

He believes these campaigns on websites like Kickstarter and GoFundMe are here to stay adding “it’s a well established part of the internet now.”

But he warns there are implications for larger charities fighting for your dollar as he says “there are a lot more competitors in the marketplace.”
