Canucks suffer collapse in a loss to the Blue Jackets

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Canucks scored two goals just 40 seconds apart to take the lead in the second period, but Columbus rallied with six unanswered goals to top Vancouver 6-2 at Rogers Arena. Daniel Sedin and Bo Horvat scored the Canucks’ goals.

Vancouver jumped all over a Blue Jackets team that was playing its second game in as many nights. The Canucks held a 20-10 advantage in shots in the first period, but Sergei Bobrovsky was very good for the visitors to keep the scored tied 0-0 after 20 minutes.

Early in the second period, Horvat picked off a Columbus break-out pass and then snapped home the 12th goal of his rookie season to open the scoring.

It took Vancouver less than a minute to double the lead, as Daniel Sedin scored on his own rebound. The goal was initially waved off as the referee believed the puck slid under the side of the net, however, video review showed the puck snuck between the post and Bobrovsky, so the call was overturned.

Columbus got its rally started with a bit of a lucky goal. Rene Bourque’s long shot was deflected by Chris Tanev on its way to the net, and fooled Eddie Lack. Just under three minutes later, Marko Dano was left alone in front of the net and scored point-blank to make it 2-2.

The Blue Jackets got another lucky one on a late powerplay in the middle period. A shot from the point was deflected by Cam Atkinson and then hit Alex Edler’s skate before sliding past Lack. That turned out to be the game-winning goal.

Columbus added to its lead 5:31 into the third period, as Dano knocked home a bouncing puck for his second goal of the night, and then he made it a three-point game as he set-up Scott Hartnell for the 5-2 goal. That ended Lack’s night after he gave up five goals on 30 shots.

Alex Wennberg scored into the empty-net to round out the scoring.

With the Canucks’ loss and the Flames’ 4-1 win over Philadelphia, Vancouver leads Calgary by just one point for second place in the Pacific Division standings.

The Canucks will head out on the road for back-to-back games over the weekend. They will visit the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday afternoon, and then travel to face the Arizona Coyotes on Sunday.
