Vancouver’s Mayor calling on higher levels of gov’t to help end street homelessness

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We won’t get the final numbers for weeks but it’s clear Mayor Gregor Robertson’s aim to get all homeless people indoors by this year has not been met.

He says that’s because he had anticipated more support from the province and the federal government.

“The hope was that we could rally the other levels of government to a level of support that would enable everybody to get in by this year and as a city we continue to do everything that we can,” he explains. “I have absolutely no regret about doing that, we’ve pushed very hard and had great success getting many people in off the streets, we have to continue that work.”

Many of the issues related to homelessness are areas of provincial responsibility and many cities and municipalities do not dedicate resources to addressing the issue.
