Lawyers for ex-NFL player Aaron Hernandez fight to bar jail conversations from murder trial

FALL RIVER, Mass. – Lawyers for former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez are fighting to keep his jailhouse conversations out of his murder trial.

Hernandez is accused in the June 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd, who was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancee.

His lawyers on Wednesday are asking a judge to bar prosecutors from using jailhouse phone calls he and others connected to the case have made.

The calls include conversations he had with his fiancee, his college teammate and Miami Dolphins player Mike Pouncey and others.

Hernandez’s lawyers argue the conversations are irrelevant and prejudicial and contain hearsay.

Prosecutors say they should be able to use them because they show Hernandez’s attempts to cover up the crime.

No testimony is scheduled in the trial Wednesday.
