100 years ago today: The Vancouver Millionaires won the Stanley Cup

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – On this day 100 years ago, Vancouver’s hockey team won the Stanley Cup for the first and only time.

Back in 1915, the Vancouver Millionaires played out of Denman Arena at Coal Harbour, had a 10-man roster, and were paid $2,500 per season.

This was back when ice cream was a nickel; tickets to a Millionaires game went for 50 cents.

Kids looked up to the Flying Dutchman, Eagle Eyes and superstar Fred “Cyclone” Taylor. Taylor scored 148 goals in 126 games in his career with the team.

The Millionaires beat Ottawa 12-3 on March 26, 1915, sweeping the Senators in their best-of-five Stanley Cup series.

To commemorate the 1915 Stanley Cup win, the Vancouver Canucks will be wearing Millionaires full replica jerseys against the Colorado Avalanche at Rogers Arena tonight.
