People of Strathcona march in support of victim

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A surprisingly big crowd showed up for a march in solidarity of a woman who was tied up and assaulted in her Strathcona home Thursday.

Over a hundred people formed a procession around the neighbourhood. Couples walked hand in hand and parents pushed strollers along Keefer Street despite the heavy rain.

“I just couldn’t imagine going home after this has happened. But it might help to know the community is rallying and supportive and protective,” said a mother, when asked why she came out with her baby.

“This has hit so close to home. For someone to be in their home and be the victim of such an attack is really scary. We just wanted to show we are here and we care,” said another woman.

A friend speaking for the injured woman thanked the crowd and said she was moved by the turnout.

She says the victim is an athlete, is strong and is doing OK.

Police will be meeting with the neighbourhood Tuesday evening.

Caleb Heaton, 25, has been charged with aggravated sexual assault, breaking and entering, robbery and unlawful confinement.
