Whitecaps look to stretch the win streak against Portland

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – After two wins away from BC Place, the Vancouver Whitecaps look for the first win at BC Place this season when they take on the Portland Timbers. (5pm)

The Whitecaps have gotten off to a fine start, with a record of 2-1. The Cascadia rival Timbers have piled up three draws in three games.

Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson expects a tough test either way from the Timbers.

“With every game that we play against Portland, it’s a physical battle. They’re a very good team. We expect a battle. We’ve got to deal with that physically, and we’ve also got to try and put our stamp on the game when we’re in possesion of the ball.”

Kendall Waston echoed his coach on Friday, along with keeping the message very simple.

“Everybody’s trying to win. We’re trying to do our best. We need to continue doing a good job. That’s the important thing.”

Octavio Rivero has been the big story for Vancouver with three goals in his first three regular season MLS appearances.

Robinson thinks Rivero can be even better.

“The chances that he’s missed have been the easier ones, rather than the one’s he’s scored. On Saturday (in Orlando) he scored a fantastic header. I think the technique of him putting his body on the line and the angle of his head is credit to him. We take the reward from that.”

Portland is coming off a 2-2 tie with Los Angeles that saw both teams score in stoppage time.

This begins a three game home stand for Vancouver, with visits from the Galaxy on April 4th, and Columbus on April 8th.
