Canadians don’t feel threatened by unsettled economy: research

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Research by an accountants’ group indicates that we are not nervous about the weak economy, but should be due to high debt loads.

The Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada says “lower interest rates, cheaper gas and a strengthening US economy may have some people thinking things are just fine.”

But CPA Canada calls some of its findings “troublesome”:

– Just 16% expect a negative change in their financial situation because of the weak economic outlook
– 53% of non-retired households are not saving on a regular basis
– About half (51%) do not have a rainy-day fund in addition to regular savings

The survey finds Alberta has the highest level of nervousness, likely due to the collapse of oil prices.
