Whitecaps play to a draw with the Crew

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Octavio Rivero tallied his league-leading fifth goal of the season, but the Vancouver Whitecaps were unable to earn a fifth straight win as they tied the Columbus Crew 2-2 at BC Place.

The single point gives the Whitecaps (4W-1D-1L) 13 total points through six matches, which has them sitting in first place in the MLS standings. Vancouver has played at least one more game than every other team in the league though.

The Crew got on the board first, as Kei Kamara chipped one home in the 24th minute. Vancouver’s Russell Teibert pulled up as he was running back, which left Kamara alone in the box.

Vancouver responded just seven minutes later. Rivero took the ball off a throw-in and hit it with his right foot to beat the keeper to tie the score 1-1.

Kamara put Columbus back in front just five minutes into the second half. Whitecaps keeper David Ousted gave the ball away, which led to Kamara scoring off a pass from Justin Meram for his second goal of the game.

Vancouver got back on level ground in the 64th minute, as Darren Mattocks finished off a play set-up by the speed of Kekuta Manneh. The goal was the first of the season for the Jamaican international.

The Whitecaps had plenty of push late in the game as they looked for the go-ahead goal, but were unable to get a third ball past Columbus keeper Steve Clark.

Vancouver will be on the road for the next two games. Up next for the Whitecaps is a meeting with the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday evening.
