Playoff smack talk: Lotusland vs Cowtown edition

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The match-up is set!

The Vancouver Canucks will be meeting the Calgary Flames in Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

So we’ve reached out to our good neighbours across the Rockies for a little talk about hockey history and the extremely friendly rivalry between the two teams.

Let’s keep this civil, shall we, by starting with Eric Francis with Cowtown’s Sportsnet 960 The Fan.

Does he even remember playoff hockey?

“It’s been six years, but I don’t know if you remember 10 years ago, the last time we played Vancouver in the playoffs? We killed them and then we went on to the Stanley Cup final! I don’t know if you remember anything like that.”

Really, it’s hard to recall such ancient history.

“I totally forgot — you guys had some riots after that when you went to the finals yourselves. Sorry, okay, next question!” he tells News1130.

Francis says the infamous Red Mile of pubs and clubs in Calgary is ready to go — and, no, its colour doesn’t come from the blood and tears of long-suffering Flames fans.

“Those aren’t tears. That’s alcohol. I know your bars close at 10 o’clock. We stay open ’til 2 a.m. because we like to have a good time.”

So wait a minute… Do the Flames even have any players old enough to go to the bar? How many players are there on the team with any pressure-filled playoff experience?

“Most of the guys on our team were playing midget hockey when the riots were going on in Vancouver so they don’t really know what it’s liked to get all jacked up and have their city turn things upside down.”

Yeah, yeah. It’s always about the riots.

What about some of the comments from Flames fans on social media?

“Man, Twitter is full of geniuses,” Francis retorts.

I don’t know. Seems spot on to us.
