VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Daniel Sedin and Chris Higgins scored goals just over four minutes apart in the first period and Eddie Lack made 22 saves as the Canucks beat the Flames 4-1 in Game 2 of their first round playoff series. The series is tied 1-1 as it shifts to Calgary.
Vancouver got off to a fast start and opened the scoring before the Flames had even registered a shot on goal. A Calgary defenseman fell down, which opened up an odd-man rush for the Sedin twins. Henrik fed a pass over to Daniel and he beat Jonas Hiller with a wristshot to make it 1-0 at the 2:56 mark of the first period.
The Canucks got a fortunate break a few minutes later, as Dennis Wideman knocked a puck out of the air and over the glass for a delay of game penalty. Vancouver capitalized with the man advantage, as Chris Higgins buried a rebound through Hiller’s five-hole to make it 2-0.
It remained a 2-0 lead for the home side until the early stages of the third period when a pair of rookies combined to extend the advantage. Bo Horvat set up Ronnie Kenins at the top of the circle and he beat Hiller with a quick shot for his first career playoff goal.
The Flames broke Lack’s shutout bid on the powerplay with 3:34 to play in regulation. Kris Russell beat Lack with a shot from the point for his second goal of the series.
Radim Vrbata added a goal into the empty net to round out the scoring.
The win snapped a seven-game home losing streak in the playoffs for the Canucks. They had not won a playoff game at Rogers Arena since beating the Bruins in Game 5 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Final.
The teams will now head east to Alberta as they’ll resume the series with Game 3 on Sunday night.
