Conflict of interest case dismissed against Vancouver mayor and city councillor

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The conflict of interest case brought against the mayor of Vancouver and a city councillor has been tossed out.

The BC Supreme Court judge ruled Gregor Robertson and Geoff Meggs did nothing wrong when they made promises to a union which also made a $100,000 donation to the Vision Vancouver campaign last election.

The mayor says it’s a disturbing trend to see people go to court to subvert the results of a democratic election.

A group of five citizens argued that should be enough to have Meggs and Robertson removed from office. It says it’s saddened by the message this ruling sends.

“This case brings up issues that strike at the core of our democratic and election systems,” says Randy Heltenwith the group. “The case is important for public trust in the integrity of both. This decision is certainly not the end of this story and the public dialogue.”

The group says it’s going over the ruling and will consider an appeal.
