Flames push past the Canucks to take the series lead

CALGARY,AB (NEWS1130) – It was the Calgary Flames’ first home playoff game since 2009, and the young squad fed off the energy of the rabid crowd. Sam Bennett scored his first career NHL goal in the 3rd period, and it stood up as the winner in a 4-2 Game 3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

The Canucks now trail the Flames 2-1 in the series. Game 4 is set for Calgary on Tuesday night.

Calgary set the tone physically, and surprised the Canucks with an aggressive forecheck, something that was not seen in the first two games in Vancouver. Calgary also had a 2-1 lead to play with going into that middle frame. After Vancouver’s Shawn Matthias jammed in a rebound to tie the game at one, Calgary blueliner TJ Brodie answered back with a point shot past Eddie Lack.

Calgary played very well once they had the lead. They would not give it up for the rest of the night. After a scoreless second period, Flames rookie Sam Bennett went to the front of the goal and slipped a loose puck past Eddie Lack at the 2:14 mark of the third.

Sean Monahan joined the party with a powerplay marker to make it 4-1, while Jannik Hansen added his first of the playoffs for Vancouver.

The Flames outshot the Canucks 28-25. The Canucks finished 0-3 on the power play.
