Courage To Come Back: Meet the unsinkable Wendy St. Marie

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – She has a gift and she wants to share it.

News1130′s series of Courage To Come Back profiles continues with a look at Wendy St. Marie, the recipient in the Medical category.

“Someone the other day said to me, ‘Wendy, you’re unsinkable’” she says.

Wendy is known for her fighting spirit, as she’s battled cancer, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, osteoporosis, and anxiety.

These days, the 58-year-old gets around in a mobility aid, but they don’t stop her from giving back to others.

“Honestly, if you put good out, you get good back. That may not [have] to do with your health or anything, but if you put good out, you’ll get good back.”

Some of the good she’s done includes consulting work for TransLink and Coast Mountain Bus Company on disability issues and volunteering with the MS Bike Tour.

She continues to volunteer to this day, everything from workshops to one-on-one peer counselling.

For Wendy, life is about gratitude, and she says when you have gratitude, you show it by giving back.

“This is not a bad life. I don’t think it will be a bad life until my second-to-last breath, really. And that’s what keeps me going.”

Despite all her volunteer work and the many lives she’s touched, Wendy feels just living each day is an accomplishment.

“I’m most proud of myself for surviving this far and being able to do what I do and I know I have a gift and I have to share it.”

News1130 is a proud sponsor of the Courage To Come Back Awards, which will be handed out Thursday May 7th at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

The awards are presented by Coast Mental Health, a non-profit society benefiting the Lower Mainland’s most vulnerable citizens.
