Baby sitter pleads guilty to child endangerment in death of girl, 4, left at home with 3 kids

NEWARK, N.J. – A New Jersey baby sitter has pleaded guilty to child endangerment charges stemming from the death of a 4-year-old girl who became trapped in a futon when left at home last year.

NJ.com (http://bit.ly/1G469Nz) reports that Sykita Covington entered her plea Friday. In return, Essex County prosecutors will recommend that she receive a three-year state prison term when she’s sentenced June 12.

Authorities have said the 39-year-old Newark woman left four children, ages 1 to 4, alone inside an apartment in May 2014.

While Covington was out, Naira Bennett became trapped inside a futon, which closed around her head and body. A neighbour found the child unresponsive, and she was pronounced dead at a hospital several hours later.

The three other children in Covington’s care were unharmed.
