Burrows leaves pre-game skate on stretcher ahead of Canucks game against Flames

CALGARY (NEWS1130) – A scary scene at the Canucks pre-game skate ahead of tonight’s Game 4 against the Calgary Flames. Alex Burrows left the rink in pain and was seen on a stretcher being placed in an ambulance. TVA Sports reporter Ren Lavoie is reporting Burrows suffered a broken rib, possibly after being hit by a puck.

Sportsnet’s Mark Spector was at the rink and saw what happened.

“The first bit of news we saw was when Alex Burrows left the practice before the mid-way point and was heard to say “help” as he went towards the dressing room. He was followed quickly by the medical staff and they were quick to treat him. The next time we saw Burrows he was leaving the Saddledome on stretcher and being loaded in to an ambulance, headed for a Calgary area hospital.”

Sven Baertschi has been recalled by Vancouver and will take Burrows spot in the lineup. It is not known if he will line up with the Sedin twins, or be placed on the second line with Chris Higgins and Nick Bonino.

Coach Willie Desjardins expects Baertschi to be fired up to play his first NHL playoff game, especially against his former team.

“I think emotion is always great, you just have to have the mindset to control it. If your mind is strong then you can play with a lot of emotion. I think he is a good young player and he will be excited to play.”

The Canucks need a victory tonight, trailing the series 2-1.

Eddie Lack gets the start in net for the Canucks, while the Flames counter with Jonas Hiller.

The puck drops at 7 p.m. You can watch it on CBC. Listen for game updates every 10 minutes on the fives.
