‘Surrey’s no longer safe,’ say people in that city ahead of a community meeting

SURREY (NEWS1130) – After more than six weeks worth of gun violence in Surrey — including the death of a young man this past weekend — people in the community are finally going to get a chance to vent their concerns at a public meeting tonight.

We went to speak with people in Surrey about whether they feel worried about their safety. There’s enough concern that most people either didn’t want to answer or didn’t go on record; those who did didn’t give a name but spoke candidly about the neighbourhood.

“There’s no safety here,” says one man. “Surrey’s no [longer] safe.”

No matter what they do or say, confidence that police will eventually control the ongoing turf war over a dial-a-dope operation is non-existent.

“This doesn’t do anything. I have no idea what’s going on. So many people have moved already because there’s a safety issue. Police don’t do anything in the city

One mother says she stopped going for early-morning runs and doesn’t expect police will make the streets any safer for her or her children anytime soon.

“They really need to fight this drug war. They need to do something about this. I understand their hands are tied because what are you supposed to do when you have people who won’t cooperate? But I know that I don’t feel safe when my kids play outside… it’s just not as safe as it used to be,” she tells us.

Police and community leaders are holding an open meeting at 7 p.m. at Tamanawis Secondary School to address concerns.
