Canucks stay alive with Game 5 win over the Flames

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Ryan Miller made 20 saves and the Canucks got goals from Nick Bonino and Daniel Sedin to beat the Flames 2-1. Vancouver kept its season alive with the win, but Calgary still leads the series 3-2.

Miller was making his first post-season start for Vancouver, and got off to a bit of a rocky start. David Jones opened the scoring on Calgary’s second shot of the game as he beat Miller just 2:40 into the first period.

Jonas Hiller kept the Canucks off the board in the first period, despite Calgary being outshot 17-8. Jannik Hansen had Vancouver’s best chance to score in the opening frame, but he hit the post.

The Canucks were finally rewarded for their efforts on their 28th shot of the game. Radim Vrbata set up Nick Bonino from behind the net and his shot went off the post and in to tie the game 1-1 at the 13:31 mark of the second period.

Early in the third period, Vancouver finally took it’s first lead of the night. Henrik Sedin won a faceoff in the Calgary zone, Dan Hamhuis fired a shot on net, and Daniel Sedin went hard to the net and knocked in the rebound to make it 2-1.

Calgary had some chances to get back on level terms with a pair of late powerplays, but the Canucks penalty killers did their job to preserve the victory.

The Canucks outshot Calgary 43-21 in the win.

The teams will play Game 6 on Saturday evening in Calgary. Game time is 6 p.m. The game will be televised on CBC.
