A team of fire fighters from Mission and Burnaby headed for earthquake stricken Nepal

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A team of firefighters from Metro Vancouver is racing to earthquake stricken Nepal to help find survivors. A few members in the group specialize in sniffer dogs.

Captain Norm MacLeod with Mission Fire Rescue is travelling with Fire Chief Larry Watkinson and others from Burnaby Fire Rescue under the umbrella organization Canadian Medical Assistance Teams.

Three of the members on the team are taking a furry friend.
“I’m bringing my chocolate lab and Chief Watkinson is bringing a golden retriever,” says MacLeod.

“Our dogs are trained to find human scent, so during the time we are there they can locate any people that are surviving and trapped under some rubble and debris,” he explains.

He says he hopes they can save lives on the short six day mission.
“We certainly care about the people in Nepal as we would for people here if they were in the same situation. We’re concerned for their safety and well-being. We’re on the way now to do the best we can to help them in their country.”

He adds the trip will be led by retired Burnaby Fire Captain Marc Pullen who’s had a lot of experience finding survivors in the Haiti quake disaster.
