A second retaining wall on the Sea to Sky Highway needs repair

WHISTLER (NEWS1130) – Another retaining wall on the Sea to Sky Highway needs repair.

It’s construction work that’s supposed to last three quarters of a century, but is at risk — just over five years after a major rebuild of the route from West Vancouver to Whistler.

Just days after Transportation Minister Todd Stone said there were no more problem retaining walls, he made this revelation yesterday in Question Period:

“There is one additional wall, as the CN Overpass by Brandywine park that [has] been identified as requiring some mitigative work.”

The Liberal government is again reassuring drivers the road is safe.

Stone blames the contractor, Kiewit, for two retaining walls not built to government standards. But it has the Opposition asking whether more work will be needed because of lax oversight.

Stone says the highway is regularly inspected, and this should be the end of it.

News1130 first told you last week about a problem retaining wall above Pasco Road in West Vancouver, meaning five months of work at the expense of Kiewit, and frustration for people living there.
