Despite low loonie, Canadians are still buying property in WA State

WHATCOM COUNTY (NEWS1130) – Canadians haven’t completely stopped buying property in Washington state, despite the low dollar.

Mike Kent with Windermere Real Estate in Whatcom County says it used to be that when the loonie hit 80 cents US, interest from Canadian buyers would “disappear completely,” but not this time.

“We’ve gone from 80 per cent of the purchasers, say in the Birch Bay area, being from the Lower Mainland… to 15 to 20 per cent. So they are still are very active players in the north Whatcom County market.”

He adds that properties in his area cost “a fraction” of vacation homes in the Okanagan or on Vancouver Island.

Kent also says there has been “minimal interest” from Canadian owners wanting to sell and cash in on the high US dollar. He tells us many people who bought in the last four or five years would sell if the loonie dropped to 75 cents US.
