How to properly scare a goose

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Spring in the city can mean an increase in interactions with urban wildlife.

There have been bear spottings in Metro Vancouver over the past week and coyotes are getting aggressive during denning season — but if Canada geese are causing you troubles, the Government of Canada has you covered!

Environment Canada has published a handbook offering advice on how to properly frighten a Canada goose causing damage to your property.

Let’s jump to section 7.1.3 Scaring/Hazing, shall we?

Suggestions include air horns, strobe lights or lasers, shiny streamers and helium balloons with graphics of large eyes.

Scarecrows are apparently also a good option, with the most effective being effigies of humans, eagles, or alligators!

The handbook says human scarecrows that appear to be carrying a shotgun may increase your success.

While not suggested in the book, a human scarecrow carrying a shotgun while riding an alligator with an eagle perched on his head might be even more effective.

It should be noted that some goose-scaring techniques do require federal permission.

Use of firearms or aircraft to harass and scare flocks of geese require a “scare permit,” as does the use of a professional falconer.
