Surrey community group wants firm crime strategy from Ottawa

SURREY (NEWS1130) – People living in Surrey are still feeling uneasy about gang violence in their community, even though the federal government is promising to clean up the streets.

The statement from Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney promised to make significant investments in crime prevention but for some people that’s not good enough.

Doug Elford with the Newton Community Association wants to see some hard numbers “It’s ok they are committing all these funds and resources to the community but it doesn’t really explain what they are doing or how much they are spending,” he explains. “It doesn’t really provide any true facts and figure, we want to see the numbers and we want to see a true commitment. We’ve had promises before.”

He adds he fears for the safety of his children and action needs to be taken as soon as possible.
