Vancouver medical marijuana dispensaries have range of rules for who can buy

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Medical marijuana dispensaries in Vancouver have a wide range of rules for who can buy pot, and that’s not likely to change even if the city regulates them.

Some require a doctor’s prescription for cannabis, while others will set you up with a naturopath via Skype, and there are concerns that some require no documentation at all.

Weeds Glass and Gifts owner Don Briere says he’ll accept any proof of a medical condition, including a bottle of prescription pain pills, because he says marijuana is safer than pharmaceuticals.

City of Vancouver spokesman Tobin Postma says the city has jurisdiction over land use but not over the selling of products _ so even if council approves a proposal to license dispensaries it can’t control who gets pot.

Constable Brian Montague says the Vancouver police also can’t ensure that everyone buying cannabis is a legitimate medical marijuana patient, but they will crack down if pot shops are suspected of selling to kids.

Police raided a Weeds Glass and Gifts store last week after a 15-year-old was allegedly hospitalized after consuming a food containing pot, but Briere says he will fire any staff found to have sold pot to youth.
