‘I feel guilty for leaving,’ says a Vancouver Island woman home from Nepal

VANCOUVER ISLAND (NEWS1130) – A woman from Vancouver Island who survived the earthquake in Nepal nine days ago is now back at home, but still in shock over her ordeal.

She tells us she’s also grappling with some feelings of guilt.

“You do have a little bit of guilt — well, a lot of guilt about that,” says Taylor Winfrey of leaving the country and all of the people — who are left homeless and struggling to find food and water — behind.

Taylor Winfrey watched as the walls of her Kathmandu home shook and gave way. She says the nightmare is never far from her thoughts.

“[It’s] always in your thoughts. I was on the ferry coming home to the island and the ferry kind of rattles and vibrates a little bit… I was pretty freaked out,” she tells us.

“I do feel bad, but it’s like, I’m not a professional disaster response team or something. You want to stay and you want to help and you want to know everyone is okay but there was nothing I could do.”

Even with all of the money being raised and supplies being shipped, she says she’s still worried about the lengthy delays in getting help to the people who need it the most.
