NDP wins Alberta provincial election

ALBERTA (NEWS1130) – The New Democrats have made a historic breakthrough in Alberta as voters turned their backs on the Progressive Conservatives and their austerity budget.

The NDP is heading for a majority government, elected or leading in 55 of the province’s 87 ridings.

Leader Rachel Notley easily won her Edmonton riding as she led her party to victory for the first time in its 75-year-history in Alberta and broke the PC’s 44-year stranglehold on power.

The party dominated in the capital of Edmonton, the PC powerbase of Calgary and even ran second to the Wildrose party in rural ridings.

The Wildrose appear set to keep its second mandate as official Opposition while the Conservatives seem headed to a third place finish.

Leader Jim Prentice is leading in his riding but Tory cabinet ministers Kyle Fawcett and Heather Klimchuk went down to early defeat and the scandal-plagued former justice minister Jonathan Denis is running third in his Calgary riding.
