VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You were even given a few extra days, but today is the final day to file your taxes on time.
If you owe money, your return must be filed by midnight to avoid a penalty.
Deborah Danis with the Canada Revenue Agency says today’s deadline also applies if “the individual, their spouse, or common-law partner elected to split pension income for 2014 [or if] the individual disposed of capital property in 2014 — for example, they sold real-estate or shares.”
If you don’t have all of the money you owe right now, Danis says you can work out a payment plan.
“It usually looks like a monthly payment arrangement, and it’s based on your financial situation. Typically, we would get information about the level of your income [and your] daily expenses, and we would determine what makes sense.”
If you’re owed money back, waiting past the deadline to file could have you waiting longer for that refund.
Nearly one million Canadians file their taxes on the last possible day.
