Ucluelet holds tsunami drill

UCLUELET (NEWS1130) – If you heard a tsunami warning would you know what to do next? Ucluelet is holding a town-wide drill Tuesday night to make sure they’re ready for an emergency.

It’s part of Emergency Preparedness Week, an initiative taking place across BC to help people understand what they’ll need to do if disaster strikes.

The sound of an alarm will tell people it’s time to head to their local community safe zone, one of five designated areas that will protect them if a tsunami hits. Taking part in the drill is optional, but recommended.

Emergency Service Manager Karla Robison thinks drills like this help to spread awareness. “As a community, I think, and as a province, I think people are becoming more and more aware of this risk.”

“This drill is something to help remind people ‘oh yeah, it’s that time of year again, I’ve got to pull out my emergency kit, I’ve got to replenish it with some food,’ so it’s just to remind people that they should practice their emergency plan.”

Robison adds the entire province needs to be aware of what to do if a tsunami hits, not just people in Ucluelet.
