Average participation in transportation tax vote surpasses last municipal election’s

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – With one week to request a voting package, participation in the transportation plebiscite now sits at about 35 per cent.

So far, turnout is higher than it was for the last municipal election.

Surrey has the lowest turnout at 29 per cent. The Village of Belcarra is leading with nearly 50 per cent participation.

Belcarra Village Mayor Ralph Drew thinks we can all do better. “While 50 per cent might seem like a high number, quite frankly, I find it a little disappointing that in this day and age with that sort of convenience we’re seeing numbers as low as 50 per cent.”

Don Main with Elections BC says there is still a lot of time to improve the turn out. He says back when we voted on the Harmonized Sales Tax, there was a lot of late registration. “We saw a lot of activity in the last week before voting closed. I’d expect we’ll see people, when there’s a deadline and they know there’s a deadline, I’m sure we’ll see more activity at that time.”

You have until May 15th to get a package if you don’t have one. You can register with Elections BC by phone or online. All ballots must be returned by May 29th.
