Coquitlam firefighters raising money for school food program

By

COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – We count on firefighters in an emergency, but their work is not limited to battling flames. Coquitlam members are raising money for a school food program through their annual Vintage Vegas Bash at the Hard Rock Casino.

They know there is a need because United Way numbers suggest one in five children in BC lives in poverty and they’ve seen it first hand in Coquitlam schools. The May 15th event will be a blast with Nearly Neil taking the stage, snacks and drinks as well as their Live and Silent auctions.

President of the Coquitlam Fire Fighters Charitable Society James Martins explains they’re currently working with Rochester Elementary and the youth worker within the school.

They’ve been doing things like purchasing much needed kitchen appliances and then spending the rest of the money on purchasing perishable and non perishable foods. The CFFCS was expecting about 30 kids to sign up, but it’s twice that. The members now help at least 60 students every week and they know there is a need for this at many other schools.
