Vancouver man sentenced for historic crimes against sex-trade workers

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A 46-year-old man has been sentenced to a year in jail for historic crimes against Vancouver sex-trade workers, including a teenage girl.

BC Supreme Court Justice Terence Schultes says in his ruling that society must collectively condemn the type of violence and exploitation committed by Shalendra Sharma.

The ruling says that in May 1994, Sharma picked up a troubled teen who performed sex acts on him but then withdrew her consent.

It says Sharma held her down on the back seat of his car and had sexual intercourse with her, before dropping her off at a restaurant in Surrey.

Sharma also pleaded guilty to driving away with the purses and belongings of three other sex workers and assaulting a fourth woman with a steering-wheel lock in 2011.

The husband and father of two has been ordered to serve three years probation upon release, register as a sex offender, and provide a DNA sample.
