Whitecaps cruise to victory over Philadelphia

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Pedro Morales and Octavio Rivero scored goals in the first half and Darren Mattocks added another late in the game as the Vancouver Whitecaps hammered the Philadelphia Union 3-0 at BC Place.

The Whitecaps (6W-3L-2D) are the first team in Major League Soccer to reach the 20-point mark this season, however, their 11 games played are more than any other team.

Philadelphia got the first good scoring chance of the game, but Vancouver’s David Ousted made a diving save off of Andrew Wenger in the 26th minute to keep the game goalless.

Just six minutes after Ousted’s big stop, he was rewarded with some goal support. Christian Techera sent Morales in for a breakaway and he curled one in for his second goal of the season to make it 1-0. The assist served as Techera’s first point with Vancouver.

In the 44th minute, Vancouver doubled the lead. Rivero chased down a Philadelphia defender and knocked him off the ball before burying his sixth goal of the season.

Mattocks scored in the 81st minute to round out the scoring. It was his third goal of the season.

Ousted faced just two shots in the win and he stopped them both for his sixth clean sheet of the year. That leads all goalkeepers in Major League Soccer.

The Whitecaps will host Edmonton in the first leg of their Canadian Championship semi-final on Wednesday and then will return to MLS action next Saturday against the Seattle Sounders, also at BC Place.
