Crews expect the wildfire near Prince George will continue to grow

PRINCE GEORGE (NEWS1130) – Crews in northern BC continue to battle a 3,500-hectare wildfire southwest of Prince George, which has forced dozens of people from their homes.

Despite the size of the fire, many of the buildings that have been evacuated near Norman Lake are holiday homes, meaning the number of people forced to leave has been restricted to the dozens.

Jill Kelsh with the Prince George Fire Centre says the weather is the biggest challenge for crews trying to control the spread of the flames.

“The hot and dry temperatures during the day make it hard to get in front of the fire,” says Kelsh. “Yesterday with the fire moving west, we were able to get on the north and east flanks, which is closest to the Norman Lake area.”

She says more help is getting to the area and the hope is that will make a difference.

“We did have more crews arrive last night, and had overnight operations going all night,” she explains. “More crews will arrive today, which will allow us to get a better handle on the fire in certain areas.”

The Little Bobtail Lake fire grew by 1,000 hectares yesterday and crews expect it to expand by a similar amount today.
