People who tailgate, text while driving among road rage triggers: survey

CHICAGO (NEWS1130) – You likely see it during your weekly commute: someone who loses their composure or cool behind the wheel.

Road rage is on the rise, according to a new report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Anger-fuelled road rage incidents have gone up by seven per cent each year since 1999.

Expedia’s annual travel survey of driver behaviour tried to figure out which behaviours on the road really set drivers off.

“We have the texter, the tailgater, the left-lane-hog, the person on the phone,” lists Expedia travel editor Ingrid Belobradic.

But it’s not just distractions outside of the car that are making you angry; it also depends on what your passengers are doing.

“The back seat driver, no surprise, topped the list, followed by the reluctant co-pilot, the person who just doesn’t want to help navigate or do anything, and then the radio hog,” says Belobradic.

The survey also found people are using more technology to help them navigate.

“One in four Americans said that they’ve downloaded an app to assist with driving. Eighty-three per cent use the map apps, with Google maps being the favorite. Forty-six per cent use traffic apps. Then we have people who also use apps to locate restaurants,” says Belobradic.
