A fire at Kinder Morgan’s tank farm could be disastrous: Burnaby Fire Dept

By

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – What would happen in an earthquake or other major disaster if the proposed Trans Mountain Pipeline project on Burnaby Mountain goes ahead?

The Burnaby Fire department is worried about the risk of a major fire at Kinder Morgan’s tank farm and it’s outlining those concerns in a new report.

Deputy Chief Chris Bowcock writes a real concern is a fire starting out at one tank on Burnaby Mountain, and spreading to others.

Part of the proposal is to increase the number of tanks at the site. Bowcock notes complexity and risk to emergency responders generally prevents a blaze involving multiple tanks being fought safely.

“I believe that this confirms the validity of the concerns which many residents have,” says Ruth Walmsley with Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion.

“The proposed pipeline and the tank farm expansion are in the midst of a densely populated residential area,” she points out.

The report will be submitted to the National Energy Board for its hearing on the proposal.

We are expecting a response from Kinder Morgan later today.
