FIFA half way to its ticket-sales goal for Women’s World Cup

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Excitement is building and Cameroon has already arrived in advance of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, being hosted in six Canadian cities including Vancouver.

FIFA is about half way in its goal to sell one-and-a-half million tickets.

The July 5 final at BC Place has long been sold out, and an impressive 40,000 tickets have been sold for the June 16 match-up between the US and Nigeria, also taking place in Vancouver.

Venue General Manager Rita Rogers says ticket sales should strengthen as teams make their way through the stages.

“It all depends on how the teams perform and who advances. In Vancouver, we might see Canada play on June 21 in one of the round of 16 matches. That would be exciting if that happens.”

Americans are filling up a lot of seats.

“Strong, strong support from across the border, for sure. A lot of ticket-sales from across the border,” says Rogers.

Other hosts are Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal and Moncton. The 52-match tournament begins June 6.

The City of Vancouver, meanwhile, is setting up a fan zone, on Cambie Street, between Dunsmuir and West Georgia, the same spot where the 2010 Winter Games fan zone was set up.

The zone will be open for 12 days. Besides food trucks and live music, fans will be able to watch matches featuring the Canadian team, on two giant screens.
