Safe Boating Awareness Week reminds you to be careful out on the water

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If you plan on lounging on a boat this summer, keep in mind it can be dangerous on the water.

It’s Safe Boating Awareness Week, and there are steps you can take to avoid potential risks. Rick Cassels with the Canadian Safe Boating Council says it’s easy to be safe on the water.

“No drinking and boating; the same laws out there as it is on the roadways. [Have] a set plan when you are out going for a number of days or even just for the day.”

Cassels explains it’s important you wear a lifejacket or face huge risks if you end up overboard. “Be aware that the waters are cold, so there is a hypothermia issue out there. Hypothermia can be overcome to a great degree just by wearing a life jacket.”

The VPD and the Coastguard will be patrolling the waters all summer.
