How much time are your kids spending on screens?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Do you hand a smart phone to your kids to keep them occupied and then go home and watch a couple hours of TV? A social media expert warns if you aren’t paying attention it can all add up.

Technology is a wonderful thing when it comes down to connecting the world and offering opportunities for education says Jesse Miller with Mediated Reality but too much of a good thing can be a problem.

“If a parent is opting only to give their kid technology because it is a very good way of keeping your child quiet or at the same time allowing yourself to get something done you have to think about time and place, we have to think about development.”

First and foremost it’s about parenting explains Miller, with many people believing that technology is a very good entertainment babysitter. “There are a number of concerns that apply to youth five and under where some of the stats are quit staggering. I think it’s somewhere close to two hours of screen time a day for children who are still before even primary school.”

He says for older kids the stats are closer to between four and six hours a day and when you take various screens into consideration it’s not hard to see how it can all add up.
