ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – Police in Abbotsford are warning you to be careful after 18 street robberies so far this year.
Constable Ian MacDonald says in many cases, the robberies have been violent. “These aren’t simply thefts of cell phones and money and jewellery; we’ve actually had a couple of victims carted to hospital.”
“Just over a week ago, we had two young men who were out having a smoke in the early morning hours when they were swarmed upon by eight other young men. Both of the victims ended up going off to hospital,” says MacDonald.
He tells us a wide range of weapons have been used. “It’s really quite an arsenal, when we look at it collectively. Sometimes, it’s just fists, but we have had everything from firearms to clubs to even cutting shears that have been brandished at these robberies.”
In five cases, the suspects wore masks or balaclavas.
The robberies have been happening all over the city, with over a third taking place on Saturdays.
“It’s mostly in dimly lit areas in public parks and on the streets. Most have taken place after dark,” says MacDonald.
He notes there’s one common theme. “They’re all described as being young males. Almost all of our victims are also young males.”
“We know that we’re likely dealing with multiple suspects — possibly different groups of suspects — because these have been taking place all through different areas in Abbotsford,” he adds.
Police don’t think these incidents were random, but they are are reminding people to walk in pairs or groups, when possible, and stay near busier areas with good lighting. They also suggest avoiding walking around during early-morning hours or late at night, if you can.
