Thousands of dollars in fines handed out in BC over May long weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A lot of people broke the law while enjoying BC’s backcountry over the May Long weekend — officers handed out thousands of dollars in fines.

In total, 180 written warnings and 140 citations were handed out with fines as high as $1,000.

Conservation officer Chris Doyle says for the most part people were well behaved, but some were caught drinking in public, driving ATV’s on protected grasslands, and not having the proper safety equipment on their boat.

He adds folks were also busted for leaving food out at campsites, attracting bears. “We want to make sure that people who are using campsites lawfully have an enjoyable experience and aren’t impacted by the poor habits of others.”

Doyle adds people’s carelessness can often times put others in danger. “We did deal with a number of firearms-related issues including persons having loaded firearms in vehicles and persons discharging firearms in areas they shouldn’t.”

He says the only injuries reported over the long weekend were connected to people losing control while driving ATVs.

RCMP, park rangers, and conservation officers will be doing the same type of enforcement blitz over the Canada Day long weekend.
