#donthave1million rally in Vancouver this weekend, pushing for housing affordability solutions

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Don’t have a million bucks for a basic house?

You’re certainly not alone — just check out the hashtag #donthave1million on Twitter and you’ll find many young professionals struggling with the high cost of living in Metro Vancouver.

A rally is planned for this weekend, pushing for solutions to our region’s affordability problems.

We told you yesterday about a report warning too many young, educated professionals are being pushed to other cities by our stratospheric real estate market.

Campaign organizer Eveline Xia says that’s the story for so many struggling millennials who have embraced the campaign.

“Is that what it’s come down to? In this city, young people are thinking of not having kids so that they can afford to live in their small apartment. Something’s wrong. Something’s really wrong with this picture.”

Young educated professionals have been posting their pictures and credentials on social media. $1 million is the cost of some basic homes in many Metro Vancouver neighbourhoods.

“Because there’s such a pent-up demand for a big discussion about the issue, it just went crazy. I haven’t been able to stop it since; it’s been two months of non-stop coverage,” adds Xia.

She expects hundreds of people to show up at a rally at the Vancouver Art Gallery on Sunday to push for solutions to Metro Vancouver’s affordability problems.
