Whitecaps fall to Rapids for second straight loss

COMMERCE CITY, CO (NEWS1130) – Lucas Pittinari scored shortly after a halftime delay for lightning as the Colorado Rapids took a 1-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer action.

The Whitecaps were coming off a win over Edmonton in the Canadian Championship on Wednesday, but they lost 2-0 to the Seattle Sounders last weekend at BC Place in their previous MLS match.

Vancouver outshot Colorado 3-0 in the first half, but the teams were tied 0-0 at the break. During the intermission, a storm moved in and the start of the second half had to be delayed because of lightning in the area.

When play resumed, Pittinari finished off a pretty passing play in the 51st minute for his first MLS goal. Gabriel Torres set Pittinari up for the goal with a beautiful one-touch pass off his back heel.

The Whitecaps thought they had tied it on a free kick from Pedro Morales, as he buried his attempt into the top-right corner of the net, but the referee had blown his whistle and the goal did not count.

Vancouver will be back in action next Saturday, hosting Real Salt Lake.
