BC wildfires sparked over the weekend caused by lightning and people

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – More than a dozen new wildfires sparked over the weekend were caused by lightning coupled with hot and dry conditions.

Because the danger rating across much of the province was high or extreme, the number of 31 new wildfires is fairly normal according to Navi Saini with the Provincial Wildfire Management Centre.

She expects the danger rating to decrease.

“The rainfall that is in the forecast as well as the higher relative humidity, however we are still expecting that the northeast and southeast sections of the province will remain hot and dry and those were the big areas of concern for us.”

One of the bigger blazes that’s been burning near Prince George is the Little Bob Tail Lake fire and Saini says that has been 100 per cent contained as of this morning.

“Crews did work around the clock over the weekend to get that contained and they were helped by cooler, wetter weather as well as a decrease in winds.”

Twelve of the 31 fires sparked over the weekend were human caused.
