It’s Substance Use Awareness Week in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS1130) – More shots were fired in Surrey last night. Thankfully, no one was hurt when the shots rang out last night near 134th Street and 70B Avenue.

On the heels of that shooting, the city is tackling some of the root problems behind crime in many communities, paying special attention to addictions.

It’s Substance Use Awareness Week, and the organization behind it wants to see the demand for drugs go down.

The week is about helping everyone think about how they can get more control over their lives and make better choices for their well being.

George Passmore with Sources Community Resources says that awareness of your own habits and impulses can be developed at a young age. “As young as kids who are old enough to even consider holding back from indulging in candy and screen time.”

He adds developing that impulse control can protect kids as they get older, saying drug and alcohol use can often start at age 11 or 12.

Passmore explains they are issuing the Surrey Habit Change Challenge.

“It’s a fun way of encouraging people to kind of reflect on their autopilot, habitual behaviours, and to consider what would be one… healthy habit that you might want to add?”

He says developing awareness of people who are struggling and how to help them is an equally important part of this.
